Wow, what a busy couple of months!
It feels like both an age and a mere moment since Julie and I were appointed Little Bluebell Buddy's. We sat around a table in Totnes and formally introduced ourselves to the rest of the team including Selina and Mel, meeting the representatives from Comic Relief and Little Something as well. We chatted, we exchanged ideas and we ate delicious pastries as we did so. What a great first meeting!
Since then we've been ever so busy! We've been training, we all went to the “I'm Fine” conference in Exeter, where we learned a lot through a combination of chatting to other people with lived experience, a couple of talks given by healthcare professionals and the ever-memorable dramatic performance of “Friction.” We also made the trek to Bluebell Place for an overnight stop, reaping knowledge from the learned Buddy's up there. It was a truly powerful and daunting experience, I found, one that made me realise just how badly I wanted to do this job, and also what a massive task it is at the same time.
When we got back to Devon, it was full steam ahead. Referrals, assessments, team meetings, and of course, all the preparation for the upcoming Comfort Zone group starting in Torquay on Monday! We've been working closely with the Devon Partnership Trust Perinatal Mental Health Team in order to find ladies that would benefit from working with us, although we aim to branch out and accept referrals from elsewhere as soon as our feet have found the floor.
What's next, I hear you ask?
Well, obviously we're starting to run the 11 week course that emulates the ones already happening in Bristol, our ladies are coming to familiarise themselves with the children's centre and the (free!) creche on Monday. Julie and I are back up to Bristol on Friday for yet more training, they really do keep us well educated!
Things are really happening down here in Devon, and the opportunity to be a part of it is, for me, an incredible thing.
We'll let you know how it goes!

We are delighted to share that we have 3 new Mums’ Comfort Zone group programmes starting the week beginning 25th April.   These groups are for mums in Bristol who are experiencing anxiety and depression related to pregnancy and birth and who have either referred themselves to us or have been referred by a health professional.

The dates for the next groups are:  Monday 25th April at St Paul’s Children’s Centre, Tuesday 26th April at Four Acres Children’s Centre and Friday 29th April at Henbury Court Children’s Centre, all in Bristol.

All our group programmes offer structured, therapeutic support together with a free crèche and are now very popular.  Please don’t be disheartened if there isn’t a place on the current course as we operate a waiting list and can keep hold of your details until our next course, which will take place in September.  We can also arrange to talk to you and offer you support with 1:1 Bluebell Buddy visits in the community as we are aware that groups are not for everyone anyway.

Please all us on 07730 367 483 or email info@bluebellcare.org if you’d like to find out more.

We have been waiting with much excitement to let you all know that Bluebell has been awarded £165,130 from The Big Lottery Fund to open Bluebell Place! This funding is to lease and redecorate a high street property that will become a central Bristol hub, cafe, shop, drop-in and meeting place for parents affected by perinatal mental illness. There will be a whole menu of activities and workshops available for both mums and dads, many of which will be creative and involve lots of the parents we have supported over the years. On sale will be wonderful products, many made by some of the talented mums in Bristol that we've had the pleasure to know over the past four years, and of course, gorgeous cakes will be in plentiful supply. The main aim will be to provide a space where parents can just come and see us, have a cup of tea and spend time with someone who understands what they are going through, something that many of the mums and dads we've worked with have told us they would really value.
As many of you know, we have been dreaming of and working towards this for the past four years and so this is a very exciting day for Bluebell! I would like to say a huge thank you to the wonderful parents who have helped us to make this a reality and of course to the amazing Bluebell team who all work so hard and with so much love and passion for families. We look forward to seeing Bluebell Place open in the new year!

Well we have been busy here at Bluebell lately! We have three Mums' Comfort Zone group programmes running now in South, North and Central Bristol, our Dads' Zone service and our Buddy service covering wide areas of the City too. If you need support or know of a mum or dad who does, then all the information you need is here in the 'Contact Us' section including our referral forms, which you can down-load.

Mums and Dads can also self-refer to our groups and Buddy service. We feel this is important, as often even telling anyone how they are feeling can be extremely difficult for some parents and so we want all parents to know that they can contact us directly and in confidence. That's not to say that we don't take safe-guarding seriously and we do work closely with health professionals such as GP's and Health Visitors to ensure that mums, dads and their children are supported in the best way possible.

We've had some small fundraising success recently with cheques arriving from local Trusts and Companies which is a goodway to start the year. Fundraising in this economic climate isn't easy and every little helps and as Bluebell relies totally on funding from grants and donors, we are very grateful to all of them. If you have an urge to raise some money for a good cause in a low-key way then maybe you could think about organising an event for Bluebell?

Talking of which, we will be launching our new fundraising campaign soon, which we hope many of you will be inspired to get involved in, but more of that in our next news update!

We have now launched our third service in Bristol, with a new group programme based at the St Paul's Children's Centre on Little Bishop Street and a new one to one Buddy service covering St Paul's, Easton, Montpelier and the Cheltenham Road areas. The group is now in its' fifth week and will run for 8 weeks, starting again in September for a new group of mums. Mums can self-refer or be referred by their health visitor, GP or another agency and all the referral forms can be found here on our website under 'Contact Us'. Both the new group and the Buddy service have been made possible by our five-year grant from The Big Lottery.

We are very pleased to announce that a new Mums' Comfort Zone group has now started at Henbury Childrens' Centre in Bristol. The group, which launched on Friday 11 Jan, will follow a similar format to our existing group with weekly sessions addressing anxiety and depression and offering activities from Zumba to pampering. Childcare is provided so that mums can take some time out for themselves and the group is facilitated by Rachel Jenkins, Occupational Therapist and Danielle Sealy, Bluebell Buddy.

The Mums' Comfort Zone group for young mums is still going well, with a new 12-week programme now taking place on Thursdays at the Teenage Parents' Project in Withywood. We still have places available for this programme; so can take referrals from health professionals or self-referrals from young mums affected by pre or post-natal depression. Please get in touch if you feel this could be helpful.

Other good news is that our Dads' Zone group is developing further with a new venue about to be announced (watch this space) and is led by Glynn, our group leader and buddy worker for men. Please do get in touch if you are a young dad in South Bristol who would like some support for issues relating to pre or post-natal depression and we can put you in touch with Glynn

The aim of this evaluation report was to ascertain whether the overall aim of Bluebell Nurses of reducing levels of anxiety and depression in young mothers was achieved in the charity’s pilot year, through the use of the Mums’ Comfort Zone group programme. The main objective was to investigate whether the structure and content of the group programme was effective and beneficial to the group attendees...

Ruth and Anna were recently given the opportunity to have a go at filming and editing a short film about Bluebell’s Mums’ Comfort Zone in South Bristol.  This was made possible by the Community Voice Film Project together with Happy City and Plastic Buddha.

So far, so good with Bluebell’s plans to extend provision of Mums Comfort Zone and the Buddy serviceto Central and North Bristol.  We’re currently having meetings with two Children’s Centres who are interested in working with us and we’re through to the next funding round, so fingers crossed we’re successful and can support more parents!

Sep 27, 2012

Bluebell has received funding to set up a Dads’ Zone and is now in the process of setting up a focus group in South Bristol to find out what support Dads really want.  From what we’ve learnt so far, we think we’re going to offer a chance to meet up fortnightly, in the evening and definitely in an informal setting, We’ve recruited a Buddy for Dads too!  Someone who has firsthand experience of supporting their partner with PND and will be able to offer other dads informal, friendly advice. We’re also very lucky to have James Costello PhD from the University of West of England involved with this piece of work as he has some real expertise in the field of working with partners of mums experiencing depression related to pregnancy and birth.

Sep 27, 2012

Ruth, Anna and Rachel are off to Huddersfield in November as they’ve been asked to take part in a conference at the University about perinatal mental health.  We’re going to talk about all the work that Bluebell’s been carrying out in Bristol and our hopes to extend our provision in the future. We’ve got a half hour slot so will have a big old chunk of time to share information about all the recent and exciting developments! We’re looking forward to learning more about what other support is out there and having the opportunity to meet all the speakers.
